On the 25th of September 2007
William Pike was on Mt. Ruapehu when it erupted, sending tonnes
of rocks, mud, and snow through the hut door of where a friend
and he were sleeping. The rocks, mud and snow crushed his right
leg so badly that it needed to be amputated below the knee. He
had other serious and complicated injuries, including severe hypothermia
with his body temperature dropping to 25 degrees centigrade. He
is very lucky to be alive.
He
has decided to not that little 'hiccup' get in the way of his life
and the things he loves. At the moment his mountaineering, tramping
and cycling etc. are on hold - until he is fit and strong again.
He is still building his fitness, but he’s already been rock climbing
and on kayaking trips. His goal is to walk up Mt. Ruapehu in December
2008. Starting in 2009 he will be cycling, tramping and basically
doing everything he did before losing his leg. One thing's for
sure - he will be back mountaineering/climbing for the 2009 winter
season.
If you want to read more about William and his accident on Mt.
Ruapehu, he has a book coming out. The book is called 'Every Day's
a Good Day' and is being published by Penguin Books, due to be
released 1st Aug 2008 in Australia and New Zealand.
